SUBMISSIONS

Blood Orange Review is modestly sized; as a result, our selection is competitive. Send us only your best literary work. The editors are professional and passionate: we seek work that is precise, fierce, and unusual.

We are looking for more than an interesting story or descriptive image. The pieces we publish are the ones that we remember days or even weeks afterward for their compelling characters, believable voices, or sharp revelations. We’re not afraid of anything, but if we bristle or stop having fun, we figure there is a good chance our readers will too.

In a word, write deftly. Leave us desiring more.

Submission Guidelines

Fiction: up to 3,000 words.

Non-Fiction: creative/personal essay or stand-alone memoir excerpt up to 3,000 words.

Poetry: 3-5 poems at a time.

Art: if you would like to submit artwork, please query us first for our specifications. Most artwork for this journal is directly solicited from the artist.

Requirements

Submit your work as a Microsoft Word attachment (single spaced, one extra space between each paragraph for prose). Also, paste the document into the body of the email. Include your name, address, and email address at the top.

Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please do not send more than one submission until you have received a response on your first submission.

A short bio is optional, but appreciated.

Send original, unpublished material only. We are no longer accepting reprints with the exception of our seasonal “Resurrection” section. If we are accepting submissions for this special section, the requirements will be posted on this page.

The editors will make every attempt to respond to work in eight weeks. We work hard to stay within this time limit, so please refrain from submitting again if you have not heard back from us. If eight weeks have passed and you have not heard from us, send us an email and we’ll get back to you right away.

The selection process is extremely subjective or may have more to do with timing than the quality of the submission. Our advice: persevere.
